The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday slammed the Greek Cypriot administration for refusing to address the infrastructural problems and remove the various physical barriers at the Metehan crossing point in Lefkoşa.
In a written statement, the foreign ministry said that this policy was making the daily lives of Turkish Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and foreigners harder.
Daily crossings through the Metehan crossing point have become an ordeal, with long queues forming due to the deliberate slowing down of procedures by Greek Cypriot officials.
“It has become obvious that the Greek Cypriot side’s customs controls at the crossing point have exceeded their purpose in an attempt to dissuade Greek Cypriots from crossing over to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to shop,” the statement read.
The TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the problem of long queues forming at the crossing point would end if the Greek Cypriot side made the necessary arrangements.
