The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described the latest decisions adopted by the International Organisation of Francophonie as unacceptable.

According to a statement released by the ministry, the organisation’s biased stance on the Cyprus issue ignores the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and contradicts the realities on the island.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on Tuesday criticized the latest decisions adopted by the International Organisation of Francophonie (OIF) at the organisation’s 18th summit held in Djerba, Tunisia.

In a written statement, the Foreign Ministry said the decisions which used expressions such as the reunification of the people of Cyprus and its institutions as well as references made to an outdated solution model was unacceptable.

The ministry claimed that the decisions were adopted under the influence of the Greek Cypriot administration which is an observer member to the organisation.

“The decisions ignore the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and contradicts the realities on the island,” the ministry said.

Pointing out that the TRNC does not have another 50 years to lose negotiating a solution formula which has lost its validity, the statement said, “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has presented the formula of a viable solution model based on two states co-existing in good neighbourly relations. It is no longer possible to abandon this thesis.”

The statement also pointed out that the historic call made recently by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the UN General Assembly in New York opened a new page on the Cyprus Issue.

It noted that a lasting settlement in Cyprus can only be reached if the international community, including the Organisation of the Francophonie accepted the current realities on the island and contributed to the solution efforts.
