Official talks to form new government to begin

All eyes are turned on efforts to form a new government after the newly elected MPs were sworn-in on Monday morning.

President Ersin Tatar is expected to hand the mandate of forming the new government to the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) Faiz Sucuoğlu on Wednesday at the latest.

The UBP leader who held a series of unofficial meetings with leaders and representatives of the other four parties with seats in parliament is expected to launch official talks as soon as he receives the task of forming the new coalition.

Speaking earlier, Sucuoğlu said that the options were clear, that it would either be a two-party or three-party coalition.

“We will either be forming a three-party coalition government made up of the UBP, the DP (Democrat Party) and the HP (Peoples’ Party) or a two-party coalition with the CTP (Republican Turkish Party) with 42 members,” he had told reporters.

The CTP leader Tufan Erhürman, although stating his party’s reservations about entering a coalition government with the UBP, said that he would still meet with Sucuoğlu for discussions.

DP leader Fikri Ataoğlu for his part said that they had still not held official talks with the UBP and that their contacts had been limited to intermediaries.

He however added that his party was ready to take part in a coalition should they receive such an offer.

HP leader Kudret Özersay expressed the view that the fewer the coalition partners, the longer the new government would remain in office.

“If we don’t want another early election we need to show the necessary support. It’s not right to bluff. We have had unofficial meetings but we shall see what happens when official talks begin, said Özersay, adding that they were not closed to the idea of entering a coalition with the UBP.

The General Secretary of the Rebirth Party (YDP) Enver Öztürk for his part said that they would be ready to cooperate with all the parties to address the mountain of problems affecting the country.
