The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre issued a message to mark 19th September Veterans Day.
In his message Töre said, “This important day is instrumental in strengthening our sense of gratitude to our hero veterans.”
he pointed out that the history of the Turkish Nation is full of epics of martyrs and veterans who laid down their lives for the sake of the homeland, and noted that there were many victories that heroic soldiers and freedom fighters brought to the Turkish Nation on the battlefields.
He reminded that the great leader, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had been bestowed the title of “Gazi” which means veteran in Turkish as well as the rank of “Marshall” by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on September 19, 1921 following his victory at the Battle of Sakarya, one of the most important victories of the Turkish War of Independence.
“This important day allows us to express our gratitude to the heroes that became martyrs. The moral heritage we have received from them and their heroism that has gone down in history allows the younger generation to embrace these national values” said Töre.
Meanwhile the Security Forces Command and the Cyprus Turkish Retired Officers Associations also issued messages of praise commemorating veterans on the 19th of September Veterans Day.
