The TRNC Legislative Assembly started its new legislative year today following a 3-month summer recess.
The 10th period, 2nd legislative year began with a ceremonial meeting held today.
A reception was also held at the parliament building to mark the new legislative year.
Parliament will hold its first session for the new legislative tomorrow.
The legislative Assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus held its first session of the new legislative year, a symbolic ceremonial gathering of MPs.
Addressing the MPs, the Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre provided information about parliament’s activities in the previous term.
He said the committees continued to work during the summer break, sending draft laws to parliament for ratification.
Töre also urged all MPs to be more punctual during the new legislative year and to embrace the call made by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the UN General Assembly for the recognition of the TRNC.
“He said that this call had greatly pleased them and that he had expressed his sincere thanks to his Turkish counterpart Mustafa Şentop.
Töre pointed out that cooperation between the two parties will continue in the period head.
The parliamentary speaker also said that they supported the construction of new parliament building and a presidential complex as both buildings were currently inadequate in addressing the needs of both institutions.
Also touching upon the armament campaign being pursued by the Greek Cypriot side, Töre said that they condemned the target practice training given to MPs.
“Such actions only serve to confirm how justified we are in insisting on the continuation of Türkiye’s guarantees.
The representatives and leaders of the political parties with seats in parliament also delivered speeches before a reception was held at the parliament building.
Parliament had entered a summer break on June 28, 2022 although convening twice in the summer for extraordinary sessions, the first on August 24 concerning the draft law on merging the municipalities and the second a briefing given by President Ersin Tatar on September 15 before his contacts in New York.
