Parliamentary Advisory Committee discusses early elections
Date Added: 05 November 2021

The Parliamentary Advisory Committee convened on Friday upon a request filed by the National Unity Party (UBP) with the aim of setting a date for early elections and amendment to be made to the “Election and Referendum Law.

Speaking to reporters after Friday’s meeting, the Speaker of Parliament Önder Sennaroğlu said he planned to convene the committee again at the nearest possible date to continue discussions.

He said that the leaders and representatives of the political parties had shared their views concerning both issues.

Sennaroğlu added that it would be best to continue discussions on the matter in detail as the UBP leader Faiz Sucuoğlu had to leave the meeting early to submit his cabinet to President Ersin Tatar.

“The political parties in the meantime will continue to discuss the issues within their own bodies,” he said.

The UBP is proposing to hold early elections on January 9, 2022 and to scrap the system of split voting introduced in the last general elections.

Meanwhile, parliament failed to convene on Friday once again due to a lack of quorum.

The session was postponed to Monday, November 8.
