President Ersin Tatar has said that the massacre that had taken place in Alaminyo, in which innocent civilians between the ages of six and eighty were murdered, was a crime committed against humanity.
Tatar issued a message on Thursday to remember the Alaminyo Martyrs.
A remembrance ceremony will be held this evening for the martyrs of Alaminyo.
The ceremony will take place in front of the Alaminyo Monument at Değirmenlik village where the survivors of Alaminyo live today at 7:30pm.
Five Alaminyo martyrs who were killed in 1967 and 15 others who were killed in 1974 by Greek Cypriots will be remembered during the ceremony.
The ceremony will begin with the laying of wreaths, a moment of silence in a show of respect and the flags will be hosited to the reciting of the National Anthem.
The ceremony will conclude with the reciting of poems by the students from the Değirmenlik High School and a speech by the Mayor of Değirmenlik Ali Karavezirler.
President Ersin Tatar who issued a message on the occasion said that the Greek Junta and its Greek Cypriot collaborators had set out to wipe out all Turkish existence on the island following the coup carried out on July 15, 1974.
He said that the Greek Junta and EOKA militants had carried out great atrocities in places where the Turkish forces could not liberate, Alaminyo being one of them.
“Innocent civilians between the ages of 6 and 80 were massacred in cold blood. This is a crime against humanity, this is brutality,” Tatar said in his message.
He reminded that similar massacres had taken place in Taşkent, Atlılar, Muratağa and Sandallar.
The president said that atrocities carried out in the past is why Türkiye’s active and effective guarantees are indispensible for the Turkish Cypriot people and why it is impossible for Turkish Cypriots to accept the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island.
He added that the Turkish Cypriot people will continue to live in freedom thanks to the support and protection of motherland Türkiye.
