President Ersin Tatar is consulting with leaders and representatives of the political parties with seats in parliament as part of efforts to form a new coalition government following Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu’s resignation on Wednesday.
Tatar on Thursday received separately the leader of the Rebirth Party (YDP)Erhan Arıklı, the Peoples’ Party (HP) Kudret Özersay and the leader of the Democratic Party (DP) Fikri Ataoğlu.
He received the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman this morning will later came together with the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) Faiz Sucuoğlu at 1:30pm this afternoon.
Speaking to reporters on Friday after meeting with President Tatar, the leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party Tufan Erhürman criticized the way the government crisis was handled.
He said that the CTP would not be part of what he described was a charade.
Earlier on Thursday following his meeting with President Ersin Tatar, the YDP leader and Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı said that the resignation of the government could not have come at a worst time as the country was going through an economic crisis.
He said that his party either supported a broad coalition made up of technocrats or a UBP-CTP coalition.
“The third option is for the reformation of the UBP-DP-YDP coalition. If not then the option of holding early elections is always on the table,” Arıklı added.
The leader of the HP Kudret Özersay told reporters after his meeting with Tatar that he suspected a clumsy scenario which his party would play no part in.
“It seems very obvious that the government which handed in its resignation will now form the same coalition without the minister in question. All these talks are aimed at forming a new government and we don’t agree with the attempt to create the perception that these meetings are just being held to exchange views,” he said.
The HP leader also said that the president should hand the task of forming the new government to the UBP leader Faiz Sucuoğlu without further delay as the country has no time to lose.
Also speaking to reporters, the leader of the DP, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu highlighted the urgency of forming a new government in light of the fact that the country was experiencing serious economic problems which needed to be addressed immediately.
He reiterated his view that a government of national consensus should be formed without further delay and that his party would not run away from its responsibilities.
