President Ersin Tatar said on Thursday that the era of seeking consent of the Greek Cypriot side for the Turkish Cypriot people and Cyprus was over.

Tatar evaluated his latest meeting with the Vice President of Gambia Badara Alieu Joof who invited him to visit his country.

In a written statement issued on Thursday, President Ersin Tatar said the will expressed by both countries to expand relations showed that the Turkish Cypriot side’s two-state policy carried out in full harmony with Türkiye was receiving international acceptance.

He highlighted the importance of the visit of the Deputy Gambian President through Ercan Airport and the invitation he received to visit the country.

Tatar said that the technical teams of both countries will be preparing the ground for the visit and a memorandum of understanding will be prepared before his visit to the country.

“The TRNC’s contacts with other countries are extremely important. Those who have allowed the Greek Cypriot administration to unjustly present itself as the sole legitimate government on the island are now experiencing a wake-up call,” he added.

President Ersin Tatar repeated his view that the call made by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the 77th UN General Assembly for the recognition of the TRNC and the admission of the TRNC to the Organisation of Turkic States were both historic moves.

“The era of seeking the consent of the Greek Cypriot side for the future of Turkish Cypriots and Cyprus is over,” he said.

Tatar concluded his statement by calling on the UN and the EU to call on the Greek Cypriot side to refrain from unilateral actions and activities which serve to heighten tensions on the island and to recognize the Turkish Cypriot people’s sovereign equality and equal international status.
