President Ersin Tatar touched upon the Cyprus issue and emphasized that an agreement on a federal basis would not serve anyone.

Stating that they had announced to the world their policy of supporting two equal sovereign states living side by side that is also supported by Turkiye, President Tatar once again pointed out that the Turkish Cypriot side supports a treaty on the basis of sovereign equality and added that it would never be possible for the Turkish Cypriot people to give up on Turkiye’s guarantees.

President Ersin Tatar made the statements while receiving the Erenköy Fighters Association, the Mayor of Istanbul Kağıthane Municipality, a delegation of Cyprus veterans who reside in Kağıthane Turkiye who are visiting the island and the Meskhetian Turks who live in the USA respectively.

Speaking during the visits President Tatar noted that the status of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus state is increasing day by day in line with the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Pointing to the importance of having a state for the Turkish Cypriot people, who have gone through great struggles in the past, President Tatar said, “In order for people to look to the future with hope and to survive, it must have sovereignty. The Turkish Cypriot people have achieved this in this important geography.”

“We believe that an agreement on a federal basis will not serve anyone,” Tatar said, adding that there are two equal peoples in Cyprus and that the Turkish Cypriot side wants a treaty on the basis of sovereign equality.

“We have never said that the Greek Cypriots are not sovereign. They also have a state and sovereignty. We want them to respect us too,” he said.

Also touching upon the economic problems experienced in the country, Tatar noted that the government should take the necessary measures in order to relieve the people and also drew attention to the importance of unity and solidarity in overcoming difficulties in the country.
