President Ersin Tatar on Thursday received the newly elected Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre.

Congratulating Töre on his election, Tatar said that they will continue to voice the Turkish Cypriot peoples’ right to be sovereign, free and independent.

Speaking during the visit, President Ersin Tatar drew attention to the importance of the duty of the House Speaker stating that he will have to oversee the work of the parliament.

“You will have to work in harmony to produce and pass legislation that will help the state’s institutions to function effectively. The messages you will be giving out to the international community regarding our freedom, sovereignty and independence is of utmost importance,” he said.

Tatar repeated that the continuation of Turkiye’s guarantees in Cyprus is the Turkish Cypriot side’s red line.

“We shall never accept an agreement to be reached under a federal roof. We have repeatedly stated that the only solution that can be reached in Cyprus is one based on two sovereign states that cooperate with one another,” the president said.

He also made reference to the remarks made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who mentioned the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) when talking about Russia’s military incursion into Ukraine.

“His mention of the TRNC and the similarities he drew are proof of our just cause. To share this with various offices and institutions of the state is important,” Tatar said.

For his part, the Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre highlighted the importance of the Office of the President in defending the national cause.

He expressed full support to President Ersin Tatar and the policies he is pursuing.

Reminding that every deputy swears an oath in parliament to defend and preserve the presence of the state and its independence, Töre described the Turkish Cypriot side’s two-state policy as an important development.
