President Ersin Tatar has said that the TRNC, in consultation with Türkiye, desired the development of relations with all neighbouring countries in the region on the basis of two states to ensure the continuation of peace and tranquillity in the region and guarantee the future of the country.
President Tatar was speaking at a conference titled “Eastern Mediterranean Geopolitics and TRNC” within the framework of his contacts in Ankara.
President Ersin Tatar on Wednesday delivered a conference titled “Eastern Mediterranean Geopolitics and the TRNC” at the Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University. The conference organized jointly by the Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University and Eko Avrasya Foundation began with an opening speech delivered by the Rector of the university Prof. Dr. Yusuf Tekin.
A promotional film on the TRNC’s new two-state policy was also screened at the conference. Addressing the participants, President Tatar pointed out that the Cyprus Peace Operation was a turning point for the Turkish Cypriot people who established their own state in 1983.
He stressed that he was determined to protect the existence of the TRNC.
Pointing out that an agreement in Cyprus can only be reached on the basis of two equal sovereign states co-existing side-by-side and the recognition of the international equal status of the Turkish Cypriots, Tatar said that even though the TRNC may currently not be recognized, there were many states that respected and acknowledged its existence.
“There are obstacles to the TRNC’s international recognition because states sympathetic to our cause are being threatened and pressured by leading members of the international arena” he added.
Noting that they were fighting to maintain security and stability in the region and to protect the rights of the Turkish nation, the president said that although there were difficulties in the path to recognition, the TRNC continued to grow stronger in every field each passing day. Stating that there was no going back from the new two-state policy, Tatar said that the TRNC will develop further economically as the policy gains momentum and strength.
President Tatar also expressed his belief that the Turkish Cypriot people, together with Türkiye, will further exalt their state and take its rightful place in the world. He also called on the international community to cooperate for the continuation of peace and tranquillity in the region.
Pointing to the natural wealth in the area where the TRNC is located, Tatar noted that Türkiye will continue to protect all the rights, interests and security of the Turkish Cypriot people as part of its the Blue Homeland doctrine.
