President Ersin Tatar on Sunday responded to Greece’s and the Greek Cypriot side’s maximalist claims over maritime jurisdiction areas in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Speaking during his contacts in Eskişehir, Turkey, Tatar said the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo had developed a number of policies which were aimed at blocking Turkey’s access to open seas and the Eastern Mediterranean, to restrict its air superiority and strip it of its rights in the region.

“A strong Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus means the continuation of our superiority in the Eastern Mediterranean and the skies above. It is important that we act together in protecting the rights of the Turkish nation,” he said.

Responding to a reporter’s question on maritime jurisdiction areas, President Ersin Tatar said that the claims put forward by the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo were unacceptable.

“It is out of the question for us to accept these and we shall resist such attempts to the very end,” he added.

Tatar said that a solution in Cyprus was only possible through two-states existing side-by-side and cooperating.

The president also pointed out that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had defended the rights of the TRNC during his address at the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

“He openly stated that the two-state solution policy I am pursuing is correct and that Ankara fully supports this position. All our contacts in New York were fruitful,” he said.

Speaking during a meeting with war veterans who fought during the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation, Tatar said that what was important for the TRNC was its sovereignty.

“The TRNC is just as legitimate as the Greek Cypriot republic,” he said, adding that Turkey’s guarantees were essential for the security of the Turkish Cypriot people.
