Recovery from Mersinlik fire continues

The Mersinlik fire which was brought under control on its fourth day continues to remain on the TRNC’s agenda.

The Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dursun Oğuz said technical work was continuing to prevent flare ups in the areas burnt by the fire.

Speaking to the TAK News Agency about the Mersinlik fire, Minister Oğuz said that cooling and intervention efforts in the area burnt will continue over the next ten days adding that two helicopters are waiting on standby in the area.

He said that they will continue to observe the situation to ensure the fire does not rekindle.

Explaining that heavy equipment was working to space out the fire safety roads, he said the teams on the ground will continue to intervene to put out any remaining smouldering trees.

Oğuz also added that a fire helicopter from Türkiye and a helicopter from the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces were waiting on standby in case there will be any need for air support.

Pointing out that a real spirit of solidarity had been displayed during the fire, Minister Oğuz said that people who heard about the fire picked up a shovel and rushed to the area.

He also expressed the hope that such a disaster will not happen again.
