Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu has stated that he fully supports the policy of two sovereign equal states on the island and noted that President Ersin Tatar and Turkey are in full harmony.
Evaluating the Cyprus problem and the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean to the Anadolu Agency, Prime Minister Sucuoğlu said that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is in a strategic position and will continue on its way in the Eastern Mediterranean and in the Blue Homeland, together with motherland Turkey.
Referring to his recent visit to Turkey, Sucuoğlu said, “There is unconditional support from the Republic of Turkey in terms of the development of the TRNC. It emerged as a common view that political stability is very important and that economic stability naturally follows political stability.”
Pointing out that many steps can be taken in terms of expansion and investment on the island, but that political stability comes first, Prime Minister Sucuoğlu said, “We fully support the President as we share the same ideas. Turkey also supports our policy of two equal states and we are in full harmony on this issue.”
Noting that the whole world and especially developed countries are eyeing this region due to the rich hydrocarbon deposits around Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region, Sucuoğlu pointed out that the Eastern Mediterranean has thus become a region where serious political manoeuvres are made.
He also noted that there is only one viable route to transport the hydrocarbon resources to be extracted to Europe, which is through Turkey via Cyprus.
Evaluating the withdrawal of the US’s support to the EastMed pipeline project, the prime minister said, “The efforts to bypass Turkey and the TRNC were nothing more than the product of the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo’s hostility. Even the more powerful states have withdrawn their support because it was not an economically feasible project. The EastMed project was a stillborn project. Today it has been shelved completely and this has not come as a surprise to us.”
Sucuoğlu also emphasized that they are in favour of cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean and that they will continue to work with Turkey if their calls are not met.
“We may be two separate states with Turkey, but we are one nation. Therefore, the destiny of a single nation is also common, it is one, and its future is also one. We will continue on our way in full harmony with the support of the motherland in the Eastern Mediterranean, in the region we call the Blue Homeland and in the TRNC. Due to Turkey’s strategic location, it is inevitable for Turkey and the TRNC to act together on all matters,” he said.
