President Ersin Tatar on Tuesday, as expected, handed over the task of forming a new government to the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) Faiz Sucuoğlu.

The mandate was handed over to Sucuoğlu by President Ersin Tatar’s Undersecretary Okan Donangil as the president is still self-isolating after contracting Covid-19.

As is customary, the party which receives the highest number of seats in parliament is given the mandate to form the government.

The process to form the new government was launched on Monday after Sucuoğlu handed in the former cabinet’s resignation to Tatar following the swearing-in ceremony held for MPs in parliament earlier in the morning.

Speaking to reporters after receiving the mandate, the UBP leader said that his priority will be to form a new government of stability that will not experience the quorum problem experienced by the previous government.

“We are aiming for a government that will complete its full term of five years,” he said.

Sucuoğlu, whose party received 24 of the 50 seats in parliament, will now be embarking on talks with the other four political parties in the Republic’s Assembly to form a new coalition government.

The UBP leader said that his party has been unofficially meeting with parties during this period but would now be holding talks at an official capacity.

Sucuoğlu said that his party stood at an equal distance to all the parties and would be visiting all of them in the coming days.

He said that the public was expecting a government that will address the country’s problems which will take decisive steps and introduce sweeping reforms.

“There is much work to be done and we shall start our efforts immediately,” Sucuoğlu.
