President Ersin Tatar has stressed that Türkiye’s support for the Turkish Cypriot side’s new two-state policy on Cyprus was extremely important.

The president’s words came during the ceremony held at the Republic’s Assembly on Monday on the occasion of the start of the 10th period, 2nd legislative year.

Speaking to reporters after the opening ceremony, President Ersin Tatar said that Türkiye’s support for the Turkish Cypriot side’s new two-state policy was extremely important.

He also said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s speech at the UN was very important for the Turkish Cypriot people.

Stressing that the TRNC was not alone, he said “our motherland Türkiye is always with us. All Turkish officials are expressing their support with their statements.”

Pointing out that they were witnessing extraordinary conditions on the Cyprus Issue, the president said, “developments such as Greece’s arms race in the Aegean and the lifting of the US arms embargo on South Cyprus are worrying for the Turkish Cypriot people. However, we are relieved that the Turkish officials have been saying that the Turkish Cypriots are not alone and that necessary steps can be taken.”

Noting that they can look to the future with more confidence as a result of the new policy on the Cyprus issue, President Tatar said that they can only return to the negotiation table as and when this new policy which is based on sovereign equality and equal international status is accepted.

Tatar also underlined that the parliament should take steps and decisions aimed at further strengthening the Turkish Cypriot side’s hand on the Cyprus problem.
