President Ersin Tatar said on Thursday that Turkey fully supported the Turkish Cypriot side’s position in favour of a two-state solution in Cyprus.
He added that Turkey will also continue to support its and the Turkish Cypriots’ rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Tatar was speaking to BRT and TAK following his meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.
He said that Turkish President Erdoğan had given instructions during the meeting for the implementation of the proposal agreed earlier in the day between the TRNC Minister of Economy and Energy Sunat Atun and Turkey’s Minister of Commerce Mehmet Muş.
The two ministers had met in Ankara earlier in the day to work out the details of how commerce between the two countries can be carried out in Turkish Liras.
Should the new deal be implemented, goods exported from Turkey to the TRNC or vice versa will be billed in the Turkish Lira, not foreign currency as is currently the practice.
Pointing out that Turkey had sent up to 600,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines to the TRNC, Tatar said that this support will continue in the coming months and that Turkey will also be sending its new vaccine Turkovac to the TRNC.
Tatar also said that current infrastructure projects carried out with the support of Turkey will be completed in the coming months and that Ercan Airport’s new terminal building will be opened for use in March.
