Tatar says new coalition not possible

President Ersin Tatar on Wednesday said that he had no intention of handing any of the parties in parliament the task of forming a new government as his meetings revealed no chance of a new coalition.

Speaking to reporters following his separate meetings on Wednesday with representatives of the Social Democratic Party, the Rebirth Party and the Democrat Party, Tatar said that none of the parties in parliament desired to form a new coalition.

He expressed the hope that parliament will adopt a decision for early elections as soon as possible.

“It is my preference that our parliament sets a date for early elections. What is essential is that the current government manages this process properly,” Tatar added.

The president said that none of the parties he met with were in a position or desire to form a coalition of 26.

Tatar added that he will meet with the Speaker of Parliament Önder Sennaroğlu in the coming days but that the best course of action would be to set a new date for the elections.

He also pointed out that it will be impossible to pass next year’s budget with the current quorum crisis in parliament which was why it was necessary to hold elections as soon as possible.

“The longer the elections are delayed the more the country will be affected. The world is going through a crisis, there is a pandemic,” Tatar said.

President Ersin Tatar had met with representatives of the National Unity Party (UBP), the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the Peoples’ Party (HP) on Tuesday.

All six parties in parliament have expressed their desire to hold early elections.
