Representatives of the Human Rights’ Platform were received by the Speaker of the Parliament Zorlu Töre on Friday.
Speaking during the visit, Töre pointed out that the human rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, as other peoples across the world, were constantly being violated.
He said that the United Nations and European Union remained indifferent to human rights violations all across the world.
“The human rights of Turkish Cypriots have been grossly violated since 1957. Both the UN and EU have remained silent over these violations,” Töre added.
He also said the conflict in Ukraine was a good example as how populations were destroyed, killed and annihilated.
Referring to the embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, the speaker of parliament said that the TRNC was being prevented from carrying out international trade.
“It is among the duties of the parliament to seek ways of ending this isolation and bringing an end to such human rights violations,” he added.
Töre also criticized the Greek Cypriot side for pursuing a smearing campaign against the TRNC, making false claims that the flow of undocumented migrants to the south came from the north.
The head of the platform Derya Beyatlı said that the organisation had been formed by five NGOs working on human rights.
“The aim of our visit is to inform parliament of the importance and need to sign international agreements and covenants on human rights and to harmonize them with our own laws. We want to exchange information on this,” Beyatlı said.
She then handed the speaker of parliament a file of proposals on how the legislative work can be carried out.
