The “Water Supply Project from Türkiye to the TRNC”, which was implemented to bring a radical solution to the water problem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, is a first in the world.
In a statement to mark its 69th anniversary, the Turkish State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) stated that the “TRNC Water Supply Project” was the world’s first and only suspended pipe transit project of its kind, taking its place among investments that have left their mark on the last era.
Since 2015, water from the Alaköprü Dam in Mersin, Türkiye is being pumped to the Geçitköy Dam in Girne through the suspended pipeline bringing an end to the TRNC’s decade’s long water problem.
The State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), which was established in Türkiye on December 18, 1953, and which is responsible for the project, issued a statement on its 69th anniversary evaluating its activities and projects.
In a statement, the DSİ stated that the TRNC Water Supply Project was the first of its kind in the world and one of the largest investments in recent history.
The sea section of the high-density polyethylene pipeline with a diameter of 1600mm pipeline is 80,151 meters long, suspended at a depth of 250 meters deep from the sea surface.
The total length of the pipeline is 107km, with 24km on the Turkish mainland, 80km at sea and 3km on the TRNC.
The Alaköprü and Geçitköy dams within the scope of the project were completed in March 2014, and the sea section was completed on August 7, 2015.
The water from Türkiye started flowing into the Geçitköy Reservoir for the first time on September 24, 2015.
