Date Added: 21 September 2021

Turkey issued a navigational telex (Navtex) rejecting the one issued by Greece in the east of Crete, for violating its continental shelf in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Turkish Defence Ministry sources said on Monday.

The Ministry said that the necessary precautions have been taken against the latest provocative initiative by Greece. Greece issued a NAVTEX on September 16 for its ‘Nautical Geo’ research vessel covering dates from September 16-22 2021, under the pretext of conducting scientific work in the east of Crete, reports say.

Turkey issued a NAVTEX objecting this move by Greece on grounds that it was violating the Turkish continental shelf.

Describing the NAVTEX issued by Greece as a provocative initiative, the Turkish Defence Ministry reminded that in line with international law Turkey was determined to protect its rights and interests against these kinds of illegal, aggressive, and provoking attempts.

Defence Ministry sources said that Greece continues to carry out such attempts by hiding behind the EU adding that the necessary precautions have been taken against the latest attempts by Greece.
