The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on Thursday reiterated that a federation will not be negotiated in Cyprus again.
Evaluating the Cyprus Issue during a live program on Turkish TRTHaber News Channel, Çavuşoğlu said the issue of sharing revenues from hydrocarbons was one of the two dimensions of the Cyprus issue.
“We do not know how possible it is to reach a comprehensive solution in Cyprus but the sharing of revenues from hydrocarbons would be easier if the Greek Cypriots agreed to it and the European Union pressured them. Profit sharing can be arranged via companies on both sides as well as through the EU or UN mechanism,” Çavuşoğlu said.
He also noted that despite the Turkish Cypriot side’s constructive proposals on the issue the Greek Cypriot side was refusing to share.
Reminding that efforts to reach a federal settlement had been unsuccessful despite 54 years of negotiations because of the Greek Cypriot side’s intransigent stance, the Turkish foreign minister said it would not be possible to reach a federal settlement even if it was negotiated for another 100 years.
“Now we need to negotiate on the basis of sovereign equality and the recognition of the Turkish Cypriots’ rights stemming from the 1960 constitution. Both TRNC President Ersin Tatar and we as a guarantor country made our position clear during the 5+1 informal meeting in Geneva last year. We continue to tell this to the world.”
Stating that the UN Security Council resolutions could change if the two sovereign states reached an agreement, he stressed that both the TRNC and Turkiye were determined in achieving this.
He also reminded that President Ersin Tatar had won the elections on the basis of this argument.
Noting that they had delineated the western boundaries of Turkiye’s continental shelf and registered it with the UN, Çavuşoğlu stressed that it was out of the question to make concessions on this issue.
Reminding that the Greek Cypriot side and Greece had attempted to violate Turkiye’s continental shelf nine times over the last year, he said that the Turkish Foreign Ministry had prevented this from happening by issuing warnings both in the south and west of its continental shelf.
“We are capable of protecting our continental shelf” Turkish Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu stressed.
