Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu criticized the United States and European Union for threatening the Turkic world during the process to grant observer status to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

He noted that neither Türkiye nor the TRNC will seek permission for the latter’s observer status in global organizations.

Çavuşoğlu said that the era of Turks had begun and that the TRNC had made a new addition to the Organisation of Turkic states.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard following their meeting in Ankara Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that neither Türkiye nor the TRNC will seek permission for the latter’s observer status in global organizations.

Çavuşoğlu continued by criticizing the EU for failing to fulfill its pledge to lift restrictions on the TRNC, for accepting the 2004 Annan Plan.

“What right does the European Union have to intervene in the Organization of Turkic States?” Çavuşoğlu asked.

Harshly criticizing the U.S. for disturbing the balance, regarding its stance on Türkiye-Greece relations and the Cyprus issue, Çavuşoğlu urged Washington to adopt a balanced stance and acknowledge Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration’s violations of international law.

“The era of Turks has begun. Therefore, we can say that admittance of the TRNC as an observer member to the Organization of Turkic States, is a new and growing sprout,” the Turkish foreign minister added.

He pointed out that the unity of the Turkic world was not to anyone’s harm, and that this unity was important for the stability of the region and peace.

“Let’s cooperate. Give up the threats, let’s cooperate and let’s take steps for the benefit of everyone,” he said.

Stressing that the threats had no effect on the Turkic world, Çavuşoğlu said “necessary steps have been taken. This is a beginning. I hope more will come step by step.”
