The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to a section of the resolution adopted in the General Affairs Council of the European Union (EU) regarding Türkiye and Cyprus.

A written statement issued by the Ministry, in which the allegations against Türkiye were rejected, it was said “we do not accept the unfortunate statements of the EU that cannot go beyond voicing the Greek-Greek Cypriot duos views in the Eastern Mediterranean and on the Cyprus issue.”

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to the decisions of the European Union General Affairs Council regarding Türkiye’s trade relations with Russia, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus issue.

A written statement issued by the Ministry it noted that the decisions adopted in the General Affairs Council of the European Union regarding Türkiye revealed the narrow-minded and prejudiced view of the EU towards Türkiye.

“Such decisions, in which the common interests of the EU are sacrificed to the interests of some member states, neither contribute to Türkiye-EU relations nor constitute a constructive agenda” the statement said and stressed that with this approach, the EU showed that it could not grasp the change in the international system correctly.

Underlining that the allegations against Türkiye were rejected, the statement said “we completely reject the EU’s unjust claims regarding democracy, the rule of law and human rights against our country.”

The statement stressed that Türkiye’s diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine and its strong support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity being ignored in the resolution was unacceptable.

The statement, which also evaluated Türkiye’s economic relations with Russia, said “our country’s trade and economic relations with Russia are not of a nature to render the sanctions ineffective, and is also important to keep the continuation of our dialogue with Russia at a minimum level to minimize the negative effects of the war, as seen in the examples of the grain and prisoner exchange agreements.”

The statement also noted that Türkiye will not allow the violation of sanctions and stressed “although it is not a party to the sanctions, our country’s determined stance that sanctions will not be allowed to be violated is also a deliberate approach. In order for Türkiye to take such decisions of the EU seriously, the EU should consider Türkiye as a candidate country conducting membership negotiations and must show the necessary political will.”
