The leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel highlighted the urgency of setting a course for the local elections.
Üstel was speaking following a meeting with the party’s authorised bodies to decide how to proceed with the local elections after the constitutional court ruled last week the decision to postpone the elections to November was unconstitutional.
The UBP leader and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel told reporters after meeting separately with the party’s Central Executive Council and the Party Assembly that it was important to overcome the current deadlock without losing any time through consultations with the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP).
“I believe that we shall free the country from the state it is in before the weekend,” Üstel said.
The prime minister pointed out that they had discussed how the elections could be held on November 27 as initially planned.
The constitutional court ruled last week that the law passed by the government to postpone the June elections to November was unconstitutional, plunging the country into chaos.
“Schools have opened, mukhtars and mayors are no longer authorised to give residency permits or spend any money. We need to find a way out of the current situation. We shall do so in consultation with the opposition and then pass a new law in parliament that will allow us to hold the elections in November. I have been fully authorised by my party to carry out these talks,” he said.
