Date Added: 21 April 2022

The National Unity Party (UBP)-Democrat Party (DP)-Rebirth Party (YDP) coalition government handed in its resignation to President Ersin Tatar on Wednesday after a split between Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu and his Finance Minister Sunat Atun.

Speaking to reporters after receiving Sucuoğlu’s resignation, President Tatar expressed the hope that a new government will be formed as urgently as there was an economic crisis in the country.

He added it was vital that the recently signed economic protocol with Turkiye will be implemented as soon as possible.

Sucuoğlu on Tuesday had conveyed his request to Tatar to remove Atun from the cabinet.

The president in return had asked for time to evaluate the issue.

In the afternoon, Sucuoğlu revisited Tatar, this time handing in his resignation which was accepted the next day.

The current government will continue to carry on with its duties until a new government is formed in line with Article 106 of the TRNC constitution.

Sucuoğlu’s three-party coalition which had been approved by President Ersin Tatar on February 21, 2022 and had received a vote of confidence in parliament on March 3 only lasted for 59 days.

A cabinet reshuffle had taken place on March 9, 2022.
