The Party Assembly of the National Unity Party (UBP) on Wednesday granted full authority to Ünal Üstel to form the new coalition government.
Üstel was given the mandate by President Ersin Tatar on Monday to form the new government.
Speaking after the party assembly meeting, the leader of the UBP Faiz Sucuoğlu said that it was necessary for the party to act in solidarity and unity.
“Any difficult situation in which the UBP is in creates problems for the country. The UBP should not reflect its own problems to the country,” he said.
Sucuoğlu said that the party’s members had all shown the necessary sensitivity during this difficult process and that he was in close contact with the party’s grass roots.
“Hopefully this difficult period will be overcome,” he added.
The UBP leader explained that the current balances had been upset after the Rebirth Party (YDP) and the Democrat Party (DP) had changed their minds at the last minute.
He said that according to his beliefs, character and values it was no longer possible to discuss coalition talks with both of these parties.
Sucuoğlu also said that the other two parties, the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the Peoples’ Party (HP) were both insisting on early elections.
“This country cannot carry the burden of holding new elections, particularly when we just had elections three months ago. That is why it is not possible to form a coalition with these two either,” he noted.
Sucuoğlu pointed out that the UBP, with its 24 MPs, was not a weak party and that should the YDP and DP insist on their threats and blackmail this would be unacceptable for the party.
