The leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) and Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu said that his party had emerged stronger from the January 23 elections.
Addressing party members in a victory speech at the UBP headquarters at Sarayönü, Lefkoşa on Sunday night, Sucuoğlu said that a difficult period awaited them but that his party was always up to the challenge.
“We are entering a decade of reforms and economic steps. The people have given us their support and we shall try to meet their expectations,” he said.
Sucuoğlu said that the country has been facing its biggest crisis since 1974 both as a result of the pandemic and the economic recession caused by the devaluation of the Turkish Lira.
Touching upon the power cuts and shortages experienced in the country, the UBP leader said that what had happened was not his party’s fault but that in the end they had emerged victorious.
Pointing out that the UBP was a party that believed in the TRNC and which acted in harmony with Turkey, the UBP leader vowed to address the country’s economic problems.
Thanking the different branches and groups within the party which worked for the UBP’s victory, he said that a party was only as strong as its grassroots.
“This government’s priority will be the economy. Once we solve the economy everything else will follow,” Sucuoğlu said, pointing out that he will be working with an experienced team.
“What this country needs is stability. We will be working to sideline any attempt to destabilize the political environment,” he said, highlighting the need to amend the election law and voting system.
