Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said on Tuesday that parliament could convene for extraordinary sessions during the summer to pass urgent legislation.
He said that there were several pending laws which require urgent ratification.
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel on Tuesday evaluated to BRT the work of the parliament on its last day before the summer recess which begins on July 1.
Pointing out that only 40 days had passed since the establishment of the government, he said the cabinet had performed well during this period.
Stating that they assumed office during a period when the economic problems continued, Üstel said, “We started working heartily with our coalition partners.”
He said that parliament could convene for extraordinary sessions during the summer break to pass urgently needed laws.
“There are many laws which people are waiting for and other urgent ones which require swift action. However, according to the constitution the parliament will be entering its summer recess on July 1. We enquired with the Office of the Chief Prosecutor whether this was possible and we received a positive answer. We will pass these laws with expedition to relieve our people. Our government will not have a summer break. We will continue to carry out our duties in the best way possible” the premier said.
Noting that the first action of the government was to introduce measures at the crossing points to ease traffic congestion and prevent long queues from forming, the prime minister noted that the government, for the first time in its history, had signed public-private partnership agreement.
He said that work to upgrade the infrastructure at the checkpoints had begun with the Beyarmudu crossing point.
Stressing that all crossing points will be overhauled, Üstel referred to the importance of the crossing points for the TRNC economy.
Stating that work had started for the completion of the work at the seaports and airport, he said that the physical infrastructure work at Ercan airport will finish in July while the new terminal building will start operating by the end of the year.
Explaining that they took a series of measures with the aim of relieving the economy, Prime Minister Üstel said that that they will be announcing a small economic package in the coming days.
