Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said on Sunday that the government was working hard to ensure that the cheapest fuel is purchased and that there is no interruption in electricity production.
In a written statement issued on Sunday, the Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said that the international tender for the procurement of fuel oil for the Teknecik Power Plant was continuing.
“The solution is actually quite simple. Interconnecting with Türkiye’s grid so as to expand our solar energy production,” he said, adding that once an agreement was struck as a result of the tender they would be able to reduce the price of electricity.
The premier however noted that achieving interconnectivity with Türkiye was not only important for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
He added that the Greek Cypriot administration should also consider this issue independent of its political positions.
Üstel pointed out that they currently had no choice but to buy urgent supplies which consequently were more expensive until the tender was completed.
“Our goal is to find a long term solution to the energy problem, free from any irregular practices and which will contribute to the peace in the region,” he said.
