Turkey’s Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun on Thursday commemorated Captain Cengiz Topel from the Turkish Air Force who was captured and murdered by Greek Cypriots in 1964 after his plane was shot down over Cyprus.

Altun shared a video prepared by the Presidency of Communications regarding Cengiz Topel on his Twitter account which pointed out that persecution and oppression of Turkish Cypriots had been stepped up following the establishment of the 1960 Cyprus Republic.

He said that the only hope Turkish Cypriots encircled by the Greek Cypriots was help to arrive from Turkey.

Topel is seen taking off in his jet from Eskişehir before reaching the enclave of Erenköy only to be shot down after successfully hitting a number of enemy targets.

The Turkish pilot is then shown ejecting from his plane and parachuting. He is captured by Greek Cypriot forces and then tortured to death.

The video ends by pointing out that the streets, parks, schools and hospitals bearing the name of Topel are a demonstration of the endless respect the Turkish nation has for Captain Topel.
