The Council of Turkish Cypriot Associations in Britain (CTCA) is continuing with its peaceful protest against the racist action taken by the Waltham Forest Council in removing and banning the Turkish Cypriot flag and insulting the community over its display.
In a written statement made by the Council of Turkish Cypriot Associations in Britain, it was reminded that the TRNC flag was hoisted in front of the London Waltham Forest Municipality Assembly building on the morning of 15 November 2021, and it was noted that this was a result of the agreement made after the negotiation of the Turkish Cypriots with the Parliament.
“It was a proud moment for our community to see our flag fly in front of the city hall,” the statement said, adding that Greek Cypriot officials later called City Councilor Grace Williams on the phone and the flag was lowered at the order of the Speaker.
Reminding that in retaliation of this the Turkish Cypriots carried out a protest in December 2021 and March 2022, it stated that the idea to hold a vigil once a week in Fellowship Square, located in front of the London Waltham Forest Municipality building, had emerged.
It also stated that the Secretary General of the Council of Turkish Cypriot Associations in Britain Nejla Clements and from Emrgoed.org James Clements and his spouse started a 2-hour watch every week from April 1 until a law suit is filed, and emphasized that the aim is to demand equal rights for Turkish Cypriots.
“We will always fight for the equal rights of Turkish Cypriots,” the statement said.
