Today is the 88th anniversary of the day Turkish women were granted the right to vote and be elected.
As part of events marking the occassion, the Cyprus Turkish Women’s Assocation headed by Halide Tunceri paid a visit to the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Zorlu Töre.
Speaking during the visit, Tunceri reminded that they were marking the 88th anniversary of the Turkish women being granted the right to vote and to be elected.
She said that for this they were eternally grateful to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his reforms..
Also speaking, the Parliamentary Speaker Zorlu Töre expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Atatürk, who gave Turkish women the right to vote and be elected, as well as his mother Zübeyde Hanım.
Also remembering Süheyla Küçük and Aydın Denktaş, for their great services to the Turkish Cypriot people, Töre stated that women were still not represented in parliament at the desired level.
“It is true we have exceeded the 20 percent quota, but there could be more female MPs. However, the important thing is to be qualified and to defend our national values,” he added.
Töre also said that the Republic’s Assembly was always prepared to assist women in their struggle.
“In your future struggle, as the Republic’s Assembly, my door is always open to you. If there is anything you would like our support in, if there is any legislation that is required, we are ready to help. Hopefully we will see more female MPs in parliament or in other high levels of state, government and non-governmental institutions. You are all very precious to us,” Töre said.
